County leaders block funding plan for development corporation


A proposed new Kenosha and Racine Economic Development Corporation has stalled, at least in part because local municipalities oppose how it was to be paid for.

“This will not be brought forward,” state Rep. Samantha Kerkman, R-Salem Lakes, said of the proposal. Opposition from municipal leaders was too great, she added.

Their primary objection: The new venture was to be funded by diverting funds from special tax districts that many communities use to help pay for special local improvements. Local officials also questioned the need for a new economic development agency...

Ken Notes: There is a simple solution here. WEDC should partially fund Economic Development Professionals in every county and major city. As employees of WEDC they would work directly with the agency on behalf of their respective communities and as employees of the municipalities they would be first in line to work with new and existing businesses.
