Mayor stays committed to new homeless men`s shelter with cost now seen at $21 million


With cost estimates now reaching $21 million, Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway remains committed to building a roughly 40,000-square-foot homeless men’s shelter on a city-owned site on the Far East Side next year, saying delay “is not an option.”

On March 9, Rhodes-Conway and Dane County Executive Joe Parisi proposed the city and county create the men’s shelter on a 2-acre, city-owned site at 1902 Bartillon Drive, just off Highway 51 roughly between East Towne Mall and Madison Area Technical College....

We could build 420 small stick built homes at 50K each, create a home ownership program for our service and retail workers plus our homeless, and provide skills training for our youth who cold help build the units. Compare our homeless encampment to Milwaukee`s veteran villages and you see a prison camp vs. a true community for homeless. Have we even asked the homeless what they want, because more shelter space is not high on their list...
