Madison City Council approves Old Sauk Road, Essen Haus, tiny house village developments


The Madison City Council on Wednesday weighed in for the first time on the tensions around development on the West Side, approving a 138-unit apartment building on Old Sauk Road that many nearby residents said was out of scale for the area.

At a meeting that stretched from Tuesday evening to past 2 a.m. Wednesday, council members said they heard residents’ concerns about the building’s size and its potential impact on traffic and stormwater management.

“What I’ve heard tonight is that the community did not feel listened to,” said Ald. Barbara Harrington-McKinney, 20th District, who represents the Southwest Side. She was one of four council members to vote against the project.
